Cheltenham Council is debating the possibility of implementing a 20mph speed limit on the majority of roads within Cheltenham.
The ideas are put forward to ensure safe travel for cyclists and walkers alike.
Set up in September 2015, a cycling & walking task group was launched to improve access for pedestrians in the attempt to limit the number of cars within the town.
The proposal is nothing new, as many locations in the UK have introduced 20mph zones to encourage alternative travel.
Cllr Max Wilkinson, who led the report, said “making most of Cheltenham 20mph would be a big step forward, encouraging people to choose cycling or walking, because it would improve safety”.
It’s thought the move will provide a “cleaner, healthier environment” claims Cllr Wilkinson.
The cycling & walking task group will seek cabinet support in light of their report and hope that their plans translate into reality.
Cheltenham and Tewkesbury cycle campaign’s chairman, Mr Andre Curtis has a positive vision for the future of Cheltenham’s transport system and hopes the proposals can encourage more people to ride a bike or walk.
“We have always felt that Cheltenham could be a real cycling town” stated Mr Curtis.
