Adverse weather conditions prompts MET to provide cycling advice

With Storm Barney about to hit the UK and many of cyclists struggling in the worsening conditions, the MET have given some salient advice.

Speaking to Cycling Weekly, Senior Operational Meteorologist, Jay Merrell, stated that “During blustery winds it is essential the cyclists maintain full concentration and full control of the bike”.

The warning comes as Storm Barney is expected to hit with up to 80mph winds in some locations across the UK.

Mr Merrell continued: “A sudden gust can result in a significant change in the affect the wind is having on the cyclist’s body, possible resulting in a brief loss of control which, in a worst case scenario, could result in the cyclist crashing, or veering into traffic”

Extra care and common sense are factored into the equation; if it is simply too treacherous to cycle and you feel that you’re in danger of coming off then consider alternative travel arrangements.
