Cycle Safety Checklist

Cycling is a great way to keep healthy, be green and get to places. However, it is important to ensure that you have the correct safety materials and understand basic road safety in order to be safe while cycling.

Many of you probably remember taking your provisional cycling tests at school to make sure you understood the potential dangers of cycling on the road, what safety gear you need to wear, the list goes on. But as adults, how much of it do we remember?

We’ve put together a bike size list to ensure that you are being cycling safely:

1.    Wear a helmet – Now, we don’t care if you think you look silly, having a helmet that fits correctly is a great start towards being safe while cycling.

2.    Wear reflective clothing – Simply contributes to being seen! Fitting reflectors onto your bicycle will help you to be seen during the darker evenings or night time. Especially if you cycle to work, it might be useful to invest in a reflective jacket to ensure that you can be seen riding in the rush hour traffic.

3.    Ride the right bike – Simply getting fitted for the correct size bike will ensure that you’re cycling safely. If you have a bike that is too big or too small you run the risk of not being in full control of the bike potentially putting yourself at risk.

4.    Maintain your bike – By maintaining your bicycle on a regular basis you can ensure that everything is working properly and determine any potential risks, such as a loose saddle or obstructions in the wheels. Ideally you should get a service at least once a year, or more if your bike is left stored for long periods; get in touch – we can help!

5.    Be cautious – Without scaremongering, you can take all the safety precautions seriously and you could still be put in danger by other people. Simply ‘having your wits about you’ could reduce your chance of getting hurt or injured by other people around you.
