The Bicycle Hub: Electric Bikes

Electric bikes are one of the most popular forms of alternative transport. Also known as an E-Bike, they can help support your muscle power with a small but powerful electric motor and they are perfect for long cycle rides that may involve varied terrain.

The first electric bike was documented in the mid 1890’s, but popularity didn’t really grow until their production increased by 35% from 1993 to 2004. They popular cycling devices have of course improved a lot in recent years by becoming much lighter and more efficient as well as becoming cheaper.

Check out these cool facts and figures about electric bikes:

  • Comfy Sizes: The frame size of a bike is very important so that you don’t put too much load on your joints and are comfortable. E-Bikes come in a variety of a frame sizes to suit you to ensure you have a comfy ride.
  • Two types: There are two main types of electric bikes: one with just pedal assistance and one with a moped function so you can ride without pedalling and take in the views!
  • Lots of gears: Electric bikes have a lot of gears with a maximum of 27! These gears make cycling easier so you can cycle faster or slower with the same number of pedalling movements.
  • Brake! One of the most important features on a bicycle are the brakes, you can have hand brakes, rim brakes, drum brakes, disc brakes and coaster brakes.
  • Design: Many E-Bikes now have a slick design and often, you wouldn't even realise it was electric!
