The Crucial tech in Cycling Safety

We were recently approached by Jenny who helps promote safe cycling. She has written an interesting article detailing how LEDs are helping to make cycling safer. Jenny had kindly provided us with a guest blog which we hope you enjoy below:

LEDs: The Crucial Tech in Cyclist Safety

In the last 10 years, the number of cyclists on our roads, has increased by 50%. This is partly because bikes are cheaper to run, partly because more people want to avoid traffic jams and awful public transport, partly to get fit, and partly to be greener. Whatever the reason, the safety of cyclists on the road has come under greater scrutiny. Luckily, this rise in the number of cyclists, such as myself, has not given rise to increased fatalities and injuries.

This is because road traffic laws, awareness campaigns, and safety technology has developed in pace with our rise in cycling. We’re still far behind the best countries in the world such as Denmark and the Netherlands, but a lot is happening. If I had the equipment back when I was a teen cycling along Cotswold roads, I’d be a lot safer and easier to see.

At the heart of this new tech is the LED. Back in the 90s this powered newer, smaller, and brighter lights. However, these lights are getting better and brighter. Furthermore, LEDs are being used to project images of bikes ahead to aid drivers, being put on clothing to be a more effective version of the high-viz jacket, and are being put into cycle paths so cyclists can see where they are going. There’s a lot more going on, and you can read more in my article on on how LEDs are helping to keep cyclists safe.
