UK set to make scrapping bike tyres illegal

Finally! The UK Government has made it clear that the disposal of bicycle tyres is soon to be an outlaw along with several other nasty waste streams. We are really big supporters of recycling here at The Bicycle Hub and with everything else going on in the world right now, we thought it was a great update to share with you!

A little bit of history…

Did you know that it has been illegal to dump automotive tyres since 2003? Yet there are still lots of bicycle tyres being dumped, this activity has been overlooked for years due to there not being a viable or sustainable recycling scheme for them, but things are finally starting to change.

What’s happening now…

The Environment Bill 2020 is currently going through parliament and will eventually create a framework in which the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) will be able to target specific types of waste. The government department has already confirmed that once legislation has passed, tyres will be one of its five priority waste streams which we think is absolutely great news!

How we’re doing our bit…

We all know that waste is a huge problem in our world and we believe it’s important to recycle as much as possible. That’s why we work with Cycle of Good to offer an inner tube recycling service right here in Cheltenham. We collect your old and used inner tubes (without the sealing slime) and package them up to be sent to Malawi where they are handcrafted into some stunningly beautiful gifts.

Just by taking some small steps you can help make a difference to our planet, so if you’ve got some old tubes lying around in your shed, stop by The Bicycle Hub in Cheltenham and we’ll do the rest!
